Hosted by the BDAPENG Specialist Group
Join us for an introduction to the new Parenteral Nutrition Competency Framework for Dietitians, developed to support safe, consistent and evidence-based practice across healthcare settings. We will take you through the Framework step by step and discuss real-world case studies, this webinar will help dietitians understand how the competencies can be applied in clinical practice and support professional development in parenteral nutrition care. The Framework is designed to support career progression and continual professional development. The competencies are based on levels of practice (entry, enhanced, advanced and consultant) and it aligns with the BDA Career Framework and the four pillars of practice.
The webinar provides a practical introduction to the new Parenteral Nutrition Competency Framework for Dietitians. The session will guide attendees through the structure and content of the framework, explaining how it can be used to support professional development and standardise practice for dietitians involved in parenteral nutrition care.
Using real-world case studies, presenters will demonstrate how the competencies can be applied in clinical practice, helping attendees translate the framework into everyday decision-making and patient care. The webinar is aimed at dietitians who are involved in parenteral nutrition practice, those who are new to or aspiring to work in parenteral nutrition, and dietitians with responsibility for supporting, supervising or managing staff delivering parenteral nutrition care. Attendees will gain practical insights into how the framework can be used to support competence development, identify training needs, and how it can be used across a range of clinical specialities.
Melanie has extensive experience in the management of parenteral nutrition (PN) and intestinal failure, becoming a supplementary non-medical prescriber in 2018. She has led projects to increase inpatient use of multi-chamber PN across the hospital trust and combines her clinical role within Leicester’s Intestinal Failure Team with research.
After recently completing her PhD evaluating parenteral requirements, intakes and influences on home PN prescribing in adults with chronic intestinal failure, she is currently a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Birmingham. This role is exploring how targeted nutritional interventions can support recovery from gastrointestinal surgery, with a focus on those patients experiencing acute intestinal failure.
As a committee member of the British Dietetic Association Parenteral & Enteral Nutrition Group (PENG) she has been involved in various workstreams, including authoring the PN chapter in the clinical handbook and is a facilitator on the clinical update course and introduction to PN course. She is also East Midlands regional BAPEN representative.
