General health symptoms

There can be many symptoms which affect your general health.

These can include:

  • Dizziness
  • Exhaustion after physical activity such as walking
  • Excessive tiredness after performing physical activity
  • Muscle and weight loss
  • Low energy or tiredness
  • Weakness
  • Pain, headaches, chest tightness
  • Fatigue

What do these symptoms have to do with my diet?

Poor nutrition or an unhealthy diet can cause a lack of energy or motivation to do things you would normally do.

This can make it more difficult to shop, cook, prepare food or eat the amount or types of food you need and may result in a lack of vitamins, minerals, energy or protein and affect your recovery from COVID-19.

Not eating enough or eating a limited diet can cause some of the general COVID-19 symptoms.

These symptoms can make it harder to exercise. Muscle and weight loss without trying can make it difficult to have the energy and strength to do your usual activities.

Not exercising can make your health worse, increasing your risk of chronic conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity.

  • Only begin exercising if it is safe for you to do so. If you are worried about starting exercise, please discuss your concerns with your healthcare professional
  • Your GP surgery may be able to refer you to the Exercise on Referral Scheme
  • If you are safe to begin exercise, have a look at the NHS home workouts to help get you moving. There are also apps to help build your fitness e.g. Couch to 5k
