Over recent months across the UK, and particularly in parts of England and Wales, the impacts of extreme weather are becoming increasingly visible. Prolonged periods of drought, periods of extreme heat and devastating wildfires have highlighted the growing pressures facing communities, food producers and our wider food system. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the recent fires and the significant disruption and loss they have caused.
These events underscore the importance of building a more resilient and sustainable food system. Food security cannot be taken for granted, and the challenges posed by climate change are likely to have long-term implications for food production and public health. Access to affordable, nutritious food is fundamental to good health, yet growing pressures on the food system risk widening existing health inequalities.
This is why we support calls for a Good Food Bill. In July, we joined more than 100 food system leaders in urging the Prime Minister to make food a national priority, alongside energy, health and defence. The Good Food Bill provides an opportunity to create a coordinated, long-term framework that supports resilient food production, improves access to healthy diets, and strengthens food security for future generations.
As these challenges continue to evolve, we believe food security and sustainable, resilient production must remain priorities for policymakers. We urge them to take decisive action by placing food at the heart of national policy. Ensuring that the UK has a food system capable of withstanding future environmental, economic and public health challenges while delivering healthy, affordable and sustainable food for everyone will strengthen food security, improve health outcomes and build a more sustainable future for all.
