Who can apply?
Researchers eligible to apply for funding through the Chief Scientist Office (CSO) Response Mode Research Grant Scheme. Applicants are encouraged to engage with their relevant University Research Office or NHS R&D Office as early as possible, particularly when applying for the early January deadlines.

Up to £350,000 at 80% Full Economic Cost (FEC) for research projects lasting up to 36 months.
Additional information:
- Applications are assessed by one of two CSO research advisory committees: the Translational Clinical Studies Research Committee or the Health Improvement, Protection and Services Research Committee.
- Applicants should review the remit of each committee to determine which committee is appropriate for their proposed research.
- Applications follow a two-stage process, beginning with an outline proposal. Successful applicants will then be invited to submit a full application.
- Full applications undergo independent peer review and review by committee members. Applicants are given the opportunity to respond to peer-review comments before the final funding recommendation is made.
- CSO has introduced a new Grants Management System, which replaces the previous email-based application process. All grant and capacity-building applications must now be submitted using the forms available through the Grants Management System.
- Applicants are encouraged to contact their relevant University Research Office or NHS R&D Office early in the application process.

Submit an outline application through the CSO Grants Management System by the relevant deadline. Applicants who are successful at the outline stage will be invited to submit a full application and will be provided with the relevant deadline.
