Nutritional Management in Pregnancy Course

The Nutritional Management in Pregnancy Course, delivered by the BDA Women's Health and Fertility Specialist Group, is a comprehensive CPD programme designed to equip nutrition professionals with the knowledge and practical skills needed to confidently support women throughout their pregnancy journey.

The course is taught by an expert multidisciplinary team of specialist dietitians, registered nutritionists and psychologists working across clinical practice and academia. Their combined expertise ensures participants gain evidence-based knowledge alongside practical clinical insights that can be applied directly to patient care.

Course Format

The teaching programme now runs over 13 taught sessions and is hosted on the BDA Learning Zone platform.

Sessions are delivered as a combination of:

  • Recorded lectures released weekly
  • Live interactive sessions via Microsoft Teams
  • Panel discussions and Q&A sessions with the teaching faculty

This blended format allows participants to learn flexibly while still engaging with expert speakers and discussing real-world clinical scenarios.

All recordings will be available so participants can catch up if unable to attend live sessions.

Presentation slides, supporting resources and key references will also be provided, and participants will have access to a discussion forum and reflection sheets to support learning.

Course Content

The 13-week programme covers a wide range of essential topics in maternal nutrition, including:

  • Preconception nutrition
  • Food choices and nutritional guidelines in pregnancy
  • Nutrition support for pregnancy complications and side effects (including hyperemesis gravidarum)
  • Food safety in pregnancy
  • Nutrient and supplement considerations
  • Weight management in pregnancy
  • Physical activity and exercise in pregnancy
  • Nutritional management following bariatric surgery
  • Diabetes in pregnancy (Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes)
  • Designing maternal and fertility weight management services
  • Developing a pregnancy management plan
  • Breastfeeding and postpartum nutritional requirements
  • Body image during pregnancy, birth and postpartum
  • Eating disorders in pregnancy
  • Panel discussion with the teaching faculty

New Additions to the Programme

The programme continues to evolve to reflect emerging clinical practice and new evidence.

New topics introduced in the latest course include:

  • Health inequalities and culturally competent pregnancy nutrition
  • Interpreting micronutrient deficiencies and blood markers in preconception and pregnancy
  • Supporting women after pregnancy loss: the patient experience and psychological impact
  • Nutrition after pregnancy loss and preparing for future pregnancy
  • Certification and CPD
  • Following course completion, participants will receive a digital certificate. Access to all course materials will remain available for a defined period after the course ends.
  • The course is CPD approved by the British Dietetic Association (BDA) and pending endorsement by the Association for Nutrition (AfN).

  • Registered Nutritionists
  • Final year dietetic students (proof of student status required)

If you register for the course but do not meet one of the above eligibility criteria, your registration will be cancelled and your registration fee will be refunded, minus an administration/cancellation fee.
