  • Beverley Beynon Cobb, Specialist Renal Dietitian and Research Fellow at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire.

Beverley has been a renal service lead dietitian and research fellow at UHCW NHS Trust. Her research, interests include the treatment of acidosis, hypertension, and CKD. She has recently published a systematic review and meta-analysis evaluating the impact of Sodium bicarbonate therapy on systolic blood pressure in CKD, co-first authored two publications: a review regarding the role of dietary acid in health and disease, and an observational cross-sectional analysis of metabolites across biological samples mediating dietary acid load and chronic kidney disease.She is co-lead for the RNG Metabolic Acidosis Working Group and sit's on the advisory board for the Dutch Renal Nutrition Research Group. Outside of my work and academic interests, she loves spending time with her family, walking, paddle boarding, and cooking.

  • Caroline Passey,  Specialist Renal Dietitian at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust. 

Dr Caroline Passey

Caroline has been a renal dietitian in Portsmouth since 1981 and developed a particular interest in the use of low protein diets to slow progression of CKD. In 1996, she was awarded an NHS Research Studentship to study for a PhD and used this to examine the effect of changing the protein from 70% animal protein to 70% vegetable protein within a LPD. This demonstrated that food was affecting the acid base balance of the blood. Since 2004 Caroline has been learning about acid base balance and has been gingerly introducing a low acid diet into the treatment of CKD. This has improved patient well-being and for some patients led to regression of CKD. In 2017 she published a paper “Reducing the dietary acid load: how a more alkaline diet benefits patients with chronic kidney disease” and was invited to speak at the 3rd International Acid-base Symposium in Slovakia in 2018.
