Dr Kawther Hashem, is Head of Research and Impact of Action on Sugar and Senior Lecturer in Public Health Nutrition, based at Queen Mary University of London.
Kawther has experience of working for the food industry, non-governmental organisations and academia. Notable areas of interest include the effects of the Soft Drinks Industry Levy, the UK Government’s sugar and calorie reduction programmes, restrictions on promotions and advertising for high-fat, salt, and sugar foods and the use of nutrition claims and child-appealing packaging on products.
Kawther currently holds a prestigious National Institute for Health and Care Research Advanced Fellowship looking at the policies that led to food reformulation to reduce sugar in the top contributors to sugar intake in children in the UK. As part of the fellowship, Kawther is a Visiting Scholar at the Centre for Food Policy at City University of London.

In the webinar we will discuss key findings from Action on Salt & Sugar’s recent survey released during Sugar Awareness Week as well as provide the latest on policies to reduce sugar intake in the UK.
Dr Peter Dyer graduated in dentistry from the Royal Dental Hospital, London and in medicine from University College Hospital, London. Upon completion of his training as a senior registrar, he was appointed consultant in oral and maxillofacial surgery to the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, with a special interest in facial trauma, orthognathic surgery and oral medicine. Peter worked as the medical director for the Trust and is now responsible for the appraisal and revalidation of the medical staff and is a clinical senior lecturer in oral surgery at UCL. Peter was the President of the British Dental Association in 2017-18 and is Chair of the Central Committee for Hospital Dental Services (CCHDS).

Protein-fortified foods have become readily available, often in the form of sweetened snack bars, flavoured yoghurts and drinks. But do we need this extra protein or is it just a marketing ploy to get us to buy more whilst increasing our sugar intakes? In this webinar, we will explore the different protein requirements throughout the life course and adjusted for clinical conditions and compare with estimated protein intakes to provide some clarity on protein sufficiency.
