Chief Scientist Office (CSO) - Response Mode Research Grant Scheme

Who can apply?
Researchers seeking funding for health research within the remit of the Chief Scientist Office (CSO). Applicants should identify which of the two CSO Research Advisory Committees is most appropriate for their proposed research:

  • Translational Clinical Studies Research Committee

  • Health Improvement, Protection and Services Research Committee

Applicants are encouraged to engage with their relevant University Research Office or NHS R&D Office as early as possible in developing their application.

Funding available:
Up to £350,000 at 80% Full Economic Cost (FEC) for research projects lasting up to 36 months.

Additional information:

  • Applications are assessed by one of CSO's two Research Advisory Committees according to the nature and focus of the proposed research.

  • Applications follow a two-stage process, beginning with an outline proposal.

  • Successful outline applicants are invited to submit a full application and are given approximately six weeks to do so.

  • Full applications undergo independent peer review and assessment by committee members.

  • Applicants are given an opportunity to respond to peer-review comments before the committee makes its funding recommendations to CSO.

  • The next round opens on 1 September 2026.

Submit an outline application through the CSO Grants Management System by midday on 16 December 2026. Applicants successful at the outline stage will be invited to submit a full application and provided with the relevant deadline.
