MRC - BEACON Award

Who can apply?
Registered healthcare professionals with a research doctorate (PhD or MD), including Allied Health Professionals, nurses, doctors, dentists, pharmacists and healthcare scientists.

The award particularly supports healthcare professionals returning to research following a period away, providing protected time to re-establish research activity and prepare for future fellowship or grant applications.

Applicants must meet the programme's regional and sponsoring HEI eligibility requirements.

North of England

Funding available:
Up to £50,000 to support up to 50% protected research time over a 12-month period. Funding enables recipients to undertake research and career development activities alongside their clinical role.

Additional information:

  • BEACON (Building Translational Research Excellence Amongst Clinicians of the North) is funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC).

  • The programme aims to strengthen clinical academic careers and research leadership across the North of England.

  • The award supports researchers at key career transition points where they may be at greater risk of leaving the clinical academic pathway.

  • Awards are expected to begin within six months of funding decisions being confirmed.

  • Applicants do not necessarily need to be employed by one of the participating NHS Trusts; eligibility can also be established through the HEI sponsoring the application.

  • An application webinar recording and applicant guidance/FAQs are available to support prospective applicants.

Complete the BEACON Funding Application Form and submit it in accordance with the applicant guidance by 4pm on 23 October 2026. Applicants should review the eligibility requirements and FAQs before applying.
