Who can apply?
Researchers proposing applied health and care research relevant to the day-to-day practice of health service staff and with a clear potential for patient benefit. Early-career researchers are encouraged to apply as Lead Applicants, with support from a more senior researcher where appropriate.
Applications must be made through an NHS body or other provider of NHS services in England. The Lead Applicant must have an appropriate relationship with the contracting organisation.

Funding available:
Up to £500,000 for projects lasting up to 36 months.
Indicative funding tiers include:
Up to £500,000 for research with the potential for relatively immediate patient benefit.
Up to £300,000 for research preparing for full trials, including feasibility and pilot studies.
Up to £200,000 for more upstream research, including observational or proof-of-concept studies.
An additional £10,000 above the usual funding tier may be requested specifically to support inclusive research activities.

The programme supports high-quality quantitative and qualitative research with a clear trajectory towards patient benefit.
Applications with strong patient and public involvement are particularly encouraged.
Early-career researchers are encouraged to apply as Lead Applicants, with a senior colleague providing mentorship and guidance as a Joint Lead Applicant where appropriate.
The current round includes the main researcher-led opportunity alongside commissioned opportunities addressing James Lind Alliance research priorities and NICE research recommendations.
Applications follow a two-stage process, beginning with an outline application. Successful applicants will be invited to submit a full application.
How to apply:
Submit an outline application through the NIHR Awards Management System by 1pm on 28 October 2026. Successful applicants are expected to be invited to submit a full application in February 2027, with the full application deadline in March 2027.
