Unnecessary delays with NHS pay award announcement

14 May 2025

It has now been a month since the NHS Pay Review Body produced its report and recommendations on pay for 2025/26 and it is frustrating that we are yet to receive a decision from the government on what they intend to award NHS staff. This unnecessary delay is causing worry and uncertainty, at a time when our members are already overworked and, in some cases, facing an uncertain future with re-organisations in trusts, ICBs and NHS England.

The BDA, along with other Agenda for Change staff side unions, is deeply disappointed at this delay, especially as we were assured that every effort would be made to move back to the intended timetable of 1 April implementation.

There are strong rumours that the intention is to award 3% on all pay points, which if correct will not go far enough to address the continued shortfall in pay and the still present cost-of-living crisis. In its written and oral evidence to the Pay Review Body, the BDA set out a claim for 1% above inflation, which currently stands at 2.6%, plus 1% to start the journey towards pay restoration.

As soon as we receive notice of the award from government, we will open a full consultation of relevant members. In the meantime, it is vitally important that we have your correct details including email, home address and workplaces so that we can reach you for consultative and ballot purposes.
