Dignity, kindness and respect in the workplace for all members

26 September 2025

The BDA seeks to ensure the fair and equal treatment of all our members, including fair representation and access to services and participation. We will seek to protect the rights of all members to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation. We will promote the equality of opportunity for the dietetic profession and work to remove barriers to career progression.

Recent public debates around immigration, demonstrations and flag raising have created unwanted tensions in workplaces and communities. This is contributing to a climate of fear, division and intimidation leaving people from our diverse and global profession feeling intimidated, isolated or excluded.

The NHS and other services depend on people from all backgrounds, races and religions and we will not tolerate abusive or intimidating behaviour. We continue to work with other organisations, unions and the TUC in challenging all forms of racism and discrimination.

Support is available to any member who suffers discrimination, harassment, racism, bullying or intimidation, so please do contact your local BDA Trade Union representative or contact us at Head Office on 0121 200 8080 for a confidential conversation about how we can help you.

We advise that you should consider using employer reporting procedures too, including Freedom To Speak Up Guardians or HR.

If you believe that you have been a victim of a hate crime you can report this through True Vision here.

Every member belongs in the BDA and we should look out for each other, challenge exclusionary behaviour and support colleagues who feel marginalised or intimidated.
