Phosphate

Phosphate additives in processed foods are major contributors to phosphorus intake. They are added to around 50% of packaged foods. Additionally, phosphate additives are almost completely absorbed, whilst phosphate that occurs naturally in food is absorbed at only 20-50%.

In early CKD, the guidelines recommend a diet rich in wholegrains, fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, while being low in salt and processed foods. Reducing processed foods will reduce phosphorus intake at this stage.

In later CKD, if serum phosphate rises, individualised advice from a dietitian will avoid unnecessary restriction of nutrient rich foods. Below is a simple phosphate fact sheet which can be used for phosphate information if needed.
