The BDA would like to congratulate member Rasleen Kahai, who was recognised at this year's HSJ Awards.
Rasleen, based at Royal Brompton Hospital, was selected as Clinical Leader of the Year - the first dietitian to win this award. She was awarded for her work improving accessibility to NHS services and addressing healthcare inequalities.
As a highly specialist respiratory dietitian and a wheelchair user, Rasleen combines her clinical knowledge and lived experience to deliver change with widespread impact.
She has sought to improve dietetic care for patients with respiratory conditions, leading innovative research initiatives for malnourished patients with interstital lung disease. Additionally, Rasleen has campaigned for better access and transport to services for patients.
Rasleen has also promoted and encouraged greater inclusivity in the workplace, with the creation of the hospital's first disability staff network.
Reflecting on her award, Rasleen commented, "I'm delighted that HSJ has appreciated the work of frontline dietetic staff.
"While it's lovely to be recognised and acknowledged by this award, I do feel it really belongs to the great people at Royal Brompton and Harefield, who have supported me over the years. From cleaners to consultants, they have made such an impact on me and my work and I am eternally grateful. I wish I could split the award up, all of them deserve a piece of it!
"I would also say it will take effort to make our hospitals accessible for all and I hope my colleagues will continue to support this. I look forward to continuing to work on this agenda directly with my Chair Simon Friend and Chief Executive Richard Grocott-Mason."
We're delighted to see Rasleen recognised for her efforts to enhance access to care for patients and to promote inclusivity within the workplace. In addition, it's wonderful that the dietetic profession has been represented and celebrated for the first time in this category.
