BDA welcomes launch of obesity service in Northern Ireland

2 July 2026

The British Dietetic Association (BDA) welcomes the recent announcement of phase one of the £5 million Regional Obesity Management Service for Northern Ireland.

Obesity is one of the biggest public health challenges facing Northern Ireland, affecting people's quality of life, increasing the risk of a range of long-term health conditions, and both contributing to and being driven by health inequalities.

A new regional service has the potential to transform care by providing timely, evidence-based support for those who need it most.

Debbie McGugan, BDA Northern Ireland Board Chair, said, "Dietitians are central to effective obesity management, bringing expertise in nutrition, behaviour change and long-term weight management, and stand ready to play a leading role in delivering this important new service.

"Having contributed to the development of this service, the profession looks forward to continuing to work with partners to support its successful delivery."
