As a BDA Trade Union Representative, Alison Carr brings a unique perspective shaped by her lived experience of dyslexia. She reflects on how this strengthens her advocacy for members.

Being dyslexic is a strength that empowers my role as a BDA Trade Union Representative. It has developed perseverance, determination, and the confidence to challenge inequality and advocate strongly for others.

Dyslexia encourages me to think differently, approach problems creatively, and find practical solutions to complex workplace issues. It has also strengthened my listening skills and empathy, allowing me to understand members’ concerns and ensure they feel heard, respected, and supported.

My lived experience has built persistence, courage, and strong self-belief. I am committed to promoting neurodiversity in the workplace and creating an environment where different ways of thinking are recognised as valuable strengths. These qualities enable me to represent colleagues with integrity, challenge unfairness, and empower others to speak up with confidence.

Being dyslexic strengthens my role as a Trade Union Representative. It has shaped my determination, confidence, and willingness to challenge inequality and stand up for others.

Dyslexia enables me to think differently, question assumptions, and approach workplace issues with creativity and clarity. This perspective helps me identify fair and practical solutions when supporting members through complex situations. It has also strengthened my listening skills and empathy, ensuring colleagues feel heard, respected, and valued.

My lived experience drives my commitment to champion neurodiversity and promote inclusive workplaces where different ways of thinking are recognised as strengths.

I advocate for practical, reasonable adjustments and recognise that many disabilities are not visible. I work to ensure colleagues feel safe to speak up and receive the understanding and support they deserve.

These values guide my approach as a representative - challenging unfairness, strengthening inclusion, and ensuring every member’s voice is heard.
