Greater union support for members working in academia on its way

18 March 2026

We’re pleased to announce a new joint membership arrangement between the BDA and the University and College Union (UCU), designed to strengthen support for dietitians working in further and higher education.

BDA members who teach dietetics in a university or college work across the academic and professional worlds. This new offer means they no longer have to choose between employment support and professional representation.

Through this partnership, members will benefit from joined-up support, bringing together expertise on workplace matters and specialist professional guidance. Joint members will also benefit from a discounted rate across both organisations.

Vicki Bennett, Chair of the BDA’s Trade Union National Executive Committee says, “This partnership recognises dietitians in academia as both education workers and health professionals.

“Joint BDA and UCU membership strengthens the voice of dietitians working in further and higher education, combining strong pay and conditions representation with expert professional support for dietetics education.”

Jo Grady, General Secretary of the UCU says, “Our partnership will see dietitians working in further and higher education access the strength and solidarity of fellow educators working alongside them.

“We look forward to growing the power of trade unions in the UK’s colleges and universities, to get the best deal for educators wherever they work.”

We’ll be sharing more details soon, including how members can access the joint offer.
