What is the BDA Trade Union?
The BDA is the only trade union and professional body that solely represents the interests of the dietetic workforce. Our role as a trade union ensures the rights of our members are protected, that they are represented in discussions around pay and terms and conditions, across all four nations and that workplace issues are tackled.
Why is the BDA Trade Union relevant to you as a student?
Not only will you soon be looking for your first role in dietetics, where our union will be able to guide and support you, but as soon as you go on your first practice-based learning (placement) we’re here to make sure you have everything you need to navigate the workplace.
Guidance and support: As a student, you will be able to access advice and guidance from the BDA Trade Union and our indemnity insurance if you need it.
Access trade union resources: You can access our online resources to learn about our campaigning activities on key issues such as pay, terms and conditions and flexible working, all of which will affect your future working life.
BDA Trade Union webinars: You can attend one of the many webinars that we organise on a range of issues, safer staffing and pay, health and safety at work, and campaigning against far-right narratives.
Ok, how can I get involved in the BDA Trade Union as a student?
Attend workplace meetings: You have access to trade union meetings in the workplace where you are doing your practice-based learning, this will allow you to meet and network with other BDA members.
Be part of the conversation: As a student member, you can get involved in your local branch and raise important issues for discussion and wider debate. You can also submit motions for TUC Congress and other conferences.
Participate in BDA Trade Union campaigns: You can support our campaigns, such as fair pay for the dietetic workforce in the NHS currently. You could get involved in raising awareness about this, signing a petition, or putting this on the agenda for one of your local workplace or branch meetings.
Create your own BDA student network: You can link in with other BDA student members you meet as you complete your practice-based learning and set up your own network. This is a great way to meet other dietetic members, build relationships and share best practice.
