The BDA Obesity Specialist Group has been successful in securing supportive funding to create dietary resources for people receiving treatment with obesity management medications.
The resources will be made available to all healthcare professionals, patients and carers for free on the BDA website.
The resources are already in high demand as there is currently a lack of credible and trustworthy advice available. Members have been calling for support in this area, requesting a consistent and coordinated message to support their patients. Many, alongside their primary care colleagues, have had to draft their own materials, duplicating clinical time and adding to their already busy workloads.
Dr Adrian Brown from University College London and Chair of the BDA Obesity Specialist Group said, “Thanks to this funding we can now help support healthcare professionals to ensure people have access to evidence-based nutritional advice to support them with obesity management medications.”
The suite of resources will cover general dietary advice for people living with obesity receiving this treatment, but will also include a number of bolt-on resources covering additional health conditions or patient groups to support the delivery of personalised care and enable condition-specific advice to be given.
Adrian added, “The resources will be available in different languages and in accessible formats, to facilitate equitable access. As you can appreciate, this is no small undertaking. We’ll be working as fast as we can to get these resources available and into the hands of healthcare professionals and patients in the coming months.”
The work will be overseen by the BDA Obesity Specialist Group, with support from the BDA, thanks to the supportive funding from Eli Lilly and Company Limited and Novo Nordisk.
NOTE: Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly have provided supportive grants to the BDA to cover the costs of the development of the resources.
Neither funder will have input into or influence over the creation, development or content available in the resources.
