The latest recommendations for complementary feeding released

18 December 2025

The BDA Paediatric Specialist Group has updated their complementary feeding position statement, which is available now.

The paper provides guidance for dietitians and other healthcare professionals on appropriate complementary feeding for infants, drawing on the most recent evidence on topics such as the optimal timing for introducing solid foods and the early introduction of potentially allergenic foods.

Following a review of the latest evidence and guidance on the use of plant-based drinks, the statement also outlines the factors that need to be considered before these drinks are used as a safe substitute for cow’s milk after one year of age.

Heather Grant, Chair of the BDA Paediatric Specialist Group says, “Our review of the evidence has been comprehensive and ultimately the guidelines remain largely unchanged.

“However, our recommendations regarding the use of plant-based milk alternatives and the guidelines for feeding infants aged 6–12 months have been refreshed to reflect recent evidence and to support appropriate advice.”
